Who am I ?
My name is Hilary Jones and I play the drums. I’ve been a musician my whole life and I have worked with a variety of artists in many styles and genres of music throughout my career, both in live performance and studio recordings. I am also an educator and have taught at many drum clinics and performed at many drum festivals worldwide.
I started playing drums professionally at age 16. My drum education began when I studied the drums privately with Maynard Ferguson and The Navy Band Commodores veteran, Mike Shepherd during my high school years. I transferred from my local school as I won the opportunity to attend the School for the Arts, where the focus was more on symphonic studies. But I knew early on that that just wasn’t the direction I wanted to go into. My love and passion was for the drum set, and for playing funk and rock-n-roll, so after high school I enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent the next 4 years in the Navy Band, stationed at San Francisco.
After being discharged from the U.S. Navy, I remained in the San Francisco bay area to pursue my music career, now as a civilian. I worked with many talented musicians there, and was grateful to work with lots of different artists and bands in a vast array of musical styles.
I relocated to Los Angeles in 1992, and started playing on the local Los Angeles music scene. Before long I was touring the globe with some of the best musicians in L.A. (and elsewhere). In time, I also got involved in the educational side of things and was sponsored to teach many drum clinics and had the great honor to perform at some of the world’s biggest and best drum festivals.
Eventually I began writing my own music and collaborating with other artists, and since have gotten involved in producing other artists, helping them to achieve their musical vision.
I am truly blessed to be affiliated with these great instrument manufacturers, and use their products exclusively;
DW Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Promark Drumsticks, and ATTACK Drumheads.
To continue to create in diverse musical forms, to express and to bring those musical forms and ideas at the highest possible level of excellence to each and every project or performance I participate in, for the enjoyment of both my fellow musicians on stage, as well as the listening audience.
Roots Music, Funk, Rock, and Contemporary Jazz Stylings.
Past Credits of those I’ve either recorded and/or performed with include:
The Delphines, The Metropolitans, Andy West, Joaquin Lievano, Stephen Bishop, Robben Ford, Eric Marienthal, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Doc Severinson, Badi Assad, Scott Henderson, Chris Pelcer, Maria Muldaur, The Mamas & the Papas, Angela Bofill, Clarence Clemmons, Pete Escovedo, and Ray Obiedo, and my pals in “Girlfriend”, to name a few.
More gigs, another record, a new drum method.
Eventually, I’m going to write a book of non-fiction that tells of my many adventures and exploits!
Other than that, who knows what the future holds? All I know is, I’m excited about it!
Maybe I’ll be working with you…
